Public hearing over Strawberry Farms development scheduled

NORTH WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. - Several residents of North Whitehall Twp., Lehigh Co., spoke up in protest of the proposed development of Strawberry Farms at the township's supervisors meeting Monday night.

While no official action on the topic was on the meeting's agenda, there was an announcement that a public hearing will be held on Tuesday, 17 September at 7:00 p.m. for the conditional use application for Strawberry Farms. The meeting will be held at the Community Fire Company #1, 4550 Old Packhouse Rd. in Schnecksville.

When given an opportunity during an open comments section of the meeting, numerous township residents expressed their concerns about the proposed 55 and older community. The supervisors then tried to explain that the public hearing and planning commission meetings are the necessary steps that must be followed when plans of this nature are submitted.

"We do have to have the hearing based on Pennsylvania law. That's their due process," said Steve Pany, the vice chairman of the Township Supervisors' board.

In order to move ahead with the submitted proposals, those making the plans for the Strawberry Farms changes will have to apply for zoning relief or face a likely rejection of the plans from the board. The plans do not currently following zoning ordinances in place and will have to be changed, if not given relief, to gain approval.

The public will be allowed to air their grievances over this issue at the public hearing.
