It's never something you  think will happen, but more than 2,100 children go missing every day.  The month of June is Child Safety Awareness Month, and we want you to be always aware.

School's almost out, and in a few weeks your kids will be outside more, home alone more, and supervised less.  Some common sense things parents should tell their children are too often overlooked.

"You hear stories every day about kids going missing or something happening to someone," said Jessica Eroh.  "So it's always in the back of your mind that it's a possibility."

That 'just in case' should be enough for parents to do everything they can.  And it starts with prevention.

"When a child is reported missing, the first couple of hours after that report is the most critical time," explained Clay Smith with the Lehigh Valley Community Resource Center.

Keeping your kids' vital data handy will help investigators track them down quickly.  Officials recommend having pictures, fingerprints and other information up to date.  Multiple agencies and organizations help parents collect it.

"We measure the child, we weigh the child, we talk to the child," shared Bob Skinner.

"You want your child to know their address, their phone number," added Trooper David Beohm.  "Maybe who their parents are."

Sometimes, even in the care of their parents, children's lives can be in danger.  Child safety seats could save your child's life if you're in an accident, but they need to be installed correctly.

"Ninety-five percent of the people that come in here with a car seat already installed for us to check, it is not installed properly," said Beohm.

State Police in Reading and the Lehigh Valley regularly offer events to check the safety seat in your car.

There's a laundry list of things folks commonly do wrong.  Having the car seat professionally checked is a sure fix.

"We take the car seat out, we document the make, the model number of it," described Beohm.  "We have recall sheets. I check the car seat to see if it was recalled."
