KKK leaflets prompt bomb scare near Hamburg

Strange find in Tilden Township puts residents on high alert

TILDEN TWP., Pa. - The Reading Bomb Squad was called out to Tilden Township Tuesday morning for a report of a possible pipe bomb in a bag with fliers about the Ku Klux Klan.

The bomb turned out to be a false alarm, but it had homeowners in Tilden Township very concerned.

Police have a message for people if this were to happen again in the future.

"My nephew this morning went to get the newspaper and he came back and it was a sandwich bag that had just a little paper and something in aluminum foil tossed in it," said neighbor Stacey Gantert.

Stacey Gantert was one of the dozen residents on Mountain Road in Tilden Township who received a package from the Traditionalist American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.

"I said, well it is just something stupid, throw it in the garbage. And we did not really give it any thought as to what it was," said Gantert.

But one of Gantert's neighbors did not do the same. Police say an older gentleman thought it looked like a bomb, so he put it in his vehicle and drove it to the police station.

"It was a cylindrical shaped object. And even though it is made out of aluminum foil, pipe bombs can be made out of anything," said Tilden Township Police Chief William McEllroy.

The police evacuated the area and dispatched the Reading Bomb Squad. They determined it was cat litter wrapped in aluminum foil. Police say it was put in there most likely to weigh the bag down. But the chief says he has a word of advice if this happens again.

"If anyone finds anything they believe to be an explosive device, they should not touch it. Do not pick it up at all. And they should call 911 so the appropriate authorities can come and handle the situation," said McEllroy.

The KKK organization told police it most likely was not one of their members because when they distribute flyers, they do thousands of them, not just a dozen.

Police say it was most likely someone who printed the organization's information off the internet.
