Lehigh University student robbed at gunpoint

2 suspects taken into custody

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Two of four men who used a pellet gun for a stickup on the Lehigh University campus in Bethlehem were caught by police, officials said.

Luis D. Maldonado and Jose A. Rivera were taken into custody after a foot chase that started on Taylor Street in Bethlehem early Wednesday morning, officials said.

Maldonado and Rivera were part of a group of four men who robbed Ron Medina of his book bag, cell phone and laptop after pointing a CO2 pellet gun at him at Taylor Street and Memorial Walkway on the Lehigh campus at about 1:15 a.m., officials said.

Motorcycle Ofc. Matthew J. Hyman was in the area and began following the men when he saw them running, and after learning that campus police had received a report of a robbery, chased down two of the suspects on foot, officials said.

The suspects were found with the Medina's book bag, which also contained the pellet gun as well as Medina's iPhone, a $1,000 laptop and his wallet, officials said.

Maldonado, 18, of 1042 Essex Court, and Rivera, 17, of 1110 Dover Lane, both of Bethlehem, were arraigned on charges of robbery, criminal conspiracy,  receiving stolen property, possessing an instrument of crime, assault and theft, according to court documents.

Maldonado's bail was set at $25,000 and Rivera's at $40,000, and both were committed to the Northampton County Prison, according to court papers.

Maldonado' preliminary hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. July 11; Rivera's is set for 10 a.m. July 11.
