Parking spots open for debate in Whitehall Twp.

WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. - Whitehall Township Board of Supervisors tackled a topic that stirred up a healthy amount of debate during Monday night's workshop meeting: parking.

An ordinance before supervisors would establish no parking zones along both sides of Quarry Street between 140 feet north of North Street and 390 feet south and on North Street between North Front Street and Quarry Street.

Mayor Ed Hozza said it was primarily a safety issue for fire department officials who, presently, would not be able to maneuver large fire trucks to battle fires.

"We have to be proactive to protect the residents if there was a fire," Hozza said.

Nearby Riverview Condominium residents often park in the street due to a premium of parking space in their lot, about 24 spots total, according to several residents who turned out to the meeting. They fervently argued there would not be enough parking if the spots on the streets, about 20 in total, were restricted.

Board President Linda Snyder was convinced after a dizzying debate and comment session by about 10 residents, that the board sorely needed more information. To that end, commissioners will hear from fire and police department officials during next Monday's meeting after which time they could vote on the issue.
