162nd Great Allentown Fair opens

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Allentown Fairgrounds were again packed with thousands of guests on Tuesday as Preview Day marked the start of the 162nd Great Allentown Fair.

"My sister and I always come out to the first day of the fair every year. We just enjoy walking around and looking at everything," said Dolores Koniger, of Whitehall Township, Lehigh County.

For the last 161 years, guests have walked through the festival gates on preview day for free.

But that changed for the 2014 fair.

Guests had the option of either paying $3 to enter, or paying $1 and bringing a non-perishable food item.

Bonnie Brosious, spokesperson for the Great Allentown Fair, said there are also plenty of new attractions this year.

That includes a new exhibit for the children--an interactive cow.

"There's actually a cow there, not a real cow there, but she's awfully cute! You can try milking her. It's a great attraction for the kids," Brosious said.

Eight-year-old Emily Ross has been attending the fair since she was a year old.

A self-declared animal lover, Ross said she was excited to try out the cow and learn more about farming. She has dreams of being a farmer one day.

"I learned farmers can milk  65 cows a day," Ross said.

The fair also welcomed the "Fired Up" High Dive team this year. Performers dive into a pool from 80 feet in the area.

The performance continues all week. The fair ends on Labor Day.
