2017 Freddy Awards nominees excited for the ceremony

VIDEO: Freddy nominations announced

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - At Dieruff High School in Allentown, there was no containing the excitement Thursday as students watched as the cast and crew of Jesus Christ Superstar garnered 12 Freddy nominations.

In 2016 Dieruff took home Best Overall Production of a Musical.

"I think it all made us feel like we definitely had to continue to push ourselves as hard as we could," said Mark Yowakim, who played Jesus.

Over at Emmaus High School, the mood was much the same...exhilaration.

"I couldn't be prouder and you guys deserve every one of these nominations so congratulations," said teacher Jill Keubler.

The cast and crew of Miss Saigon took home the most nominations at 18.

"It's such a serious subject matter so we really wanted to portray it the best that we could," said Julia Bezems who played Kim.

It was the same at high schools across the Lehigh Valley and Western New Jersey…students cheering on their cast mates and the other schools.

"I am telling you Miss Saigon is like poppin!" said Yowakim.

These students say even though there can only be one overall winner, it's not a competition.

"We do theater because it's fun and it's something that we are all passionate about," said Yowakim.

The students say they look at the Freddy awards as a family reunion of high school theater companies.

And no matter if they were nominated, or perform at the Freddy's, they want their extended family members to follow their passion.

"Wherever you go, never give up your dreams never give up because it can always, it can always come true," said Prescious Correa, who played Pontius Pilot.

The Freddy's will air live on WFMZ-TV Thursday, May 25.
