4-year-old "Prom Princess" Layla Mae Knighton passes away

EASTON, Pa. - A 4-year-old girl who became the belle of the ball during Wilson Area High School's Senior Prom, has passed away.

Layla Mae Knighton was diagnosed last year with an inoperable brain tumor. Her doctors gave her months to live, but she survived for more than a year.

Earlier this month, a close family friend, Gianna Gomes, a senior at Wilson, asked Layla if she'd like to go to prom with her.

"She'll never wear a prom dress, she'll never go to high school, she'll never do any of those things," Layla's grandmother told 69 news, adding "But Gianna is giving her those things."

During the prom, Layla was even crowned "Prom Princess."

Layla passed away Tuesday morning at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

Family and friends held a gathering Tuesday night in Easton to release balloons in Layla’s memory.
