Accident causes traffic delays on I-78 in Salisbury Township

Man seriously injured in I-78 wreck

SALISBURY TOWNSHIP, Pa. - One man suffered serious injuries in an accident which caused delays on I-78 in Lehigh County Saturday afternoon.

The accident occurred at about 12:00 noon on the Eastbound side of I-78 in Salisbury Township, according to State Police.

State Police said a Ford Ranger driven by Douglas McGowan, 63, of Chambersburg and a GMC Sierra operated by Michael Wieczorek, 50, of Nazareth were at the bottom of the ramp from I-78 east to Summit Lawn, when traffic slowed down. McGowan's vehicle slowed down, but Wieczorek's vehicle, which was behind McGowan, did not slow down in time before rear ending McGowan's Ranger, according to police. The Ranger rolled over upon impact, police said.

Police said McGowan, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected out of the driver's side window of his Ranger. McGowan was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital. Wieczorek was treated for minor cuts.

McGowan remains in the Intensive Care Unit at Lehigh Valley Hospital, according to hospital officials.

Police said Wieczorek would be cited for failing to drive at a safe speed.
