Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton unemployment rate at 5.0 percent in April

HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton, Pennsylvania-New Jersey Metropolitan Statistical Area's (MSA) seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose two-tenths of a percentage to 5.0 percent, according to a release from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry.

The state rate was at 4.9 percent, an increase of one-tenth of a point over the month; while the U.S. rate declined by one-tenth of a point to 4.4 percent, according to the release. 

The release stated that over this year, the MSA's rate decreased four-tenths of a percentage point and the drop in the state's rate matched that of the nation's, both of which declined six-tenths of a point. The A-B-E's rate was tied with that of the Altoona MSA for the 10th lowest among Pennsylvania's 18 MSAs in April.  Rates ranged from 3.8 percent in the Gettysburg and Lancaster MSAs to 6.2 percent in the Johnstown MSA, according to the release. 

According to the release, The A-B-E MSA’s seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs in April increased 1,200 to 363,600. Over the year, jobs in the MSA were down 0.2 percent (-800 jobs), while jobs in the state overall were up 0.8 percent. Detailed industry data for the MSA is not seasonally adjusted, according to the department. 

Over the month, mining, logging, & construction, professional & business services, and leisure & hospitality all experienced seasonal increases, according to the release.

Some supersectors also showed significant employment changes over the year, both positive and negative, according to the release. The largest gain since April 2016 was in trade, transportation, & utilities, up 4,100 jobs, while professional & business services saw the largest drop, down 4,600 jobs, according to the department.
