Allentown church sending team, supplies to Puerto Rico

VIDEO Allentown church sending team,...

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - UPDATE: LifeChurch has expanded their list of items they are hoping to bring to Puerto Rico. See the list below. The church plans on sending a relief team in late October.

After Maria, there's a rush to help the people of Puerto Rico.

There are streets that are impassable, towns that don't have running water and electricity and there are reports of survivors crowding around cell towers, when they are working, trying to contact and update loved ones.

At least 10 people have died and thousands more in Puerto Rico are displaced by Hurricane Maria.

"It's really heartbreaking. You see the devastation and it's hard to fathom," said Tara Craig, of Life Church in Allentown.

FEMA response teams are in place but members of Life Church say they feel the need to do their part, to do more than send prayers. They intend to send some of their people and supplies.

"We offer variety of different ways for people to get involved whether they would like to go on a trip, it's not something that's for everyone or if they would like to contribute financially or if they would like to donate supplies that could be needed or of course prayer is important too," Craig said.

In the the second week of October, Life Church will send a small crew down to Puerto Rico.

Right now, donations of heavy duty tarps, ropes and duct tape are needed for those volunteers to take with them.

Craig said the hurricane hits home for many people in the Lehigh Valley who have family living in Puerto Rico. She said many haven't heard from family yet and the church is making an effort to help with that.

Church members can log onto Life Church's website and fill out a form with information about their families.

"Part of the mission of our relief team will be trying to make contact with those individuals," Craig said.
