Allentown has new oil, gas burner inspection ordinance

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - There's a new ordinance in Allentown and if you don't follow it you could be fined up to $1,000.

When's the last time you looked at your furnace?

"We always recommend it to people when we get inspections of their property, is that they have their furnaces serviced on a periodic basis," said David Paulus, director of the Allentown Building Standards and Safety Office.

Now it's no longer a recommendation.

At the urging of the Allentown Building Standards and Safety Office, City Council will require all homeowners to get their furnace inspected.

Once a year for homes with an oil furnace and once every two years for places with a gas furnace.

"Basically we're going to look to see that they have a tag on them," added Paulus. "They've been serviced in the last year or two by either UGI or some reputable oil company or somebody who does furnaces."

There are three issues inspectors say this will handle.

One is fire safety.

"A lot of times when it is shut down over the summer and they go to turn it on, on that first cold day in the fall people get blow back or soot build up could start a fire," said Paulus.

It will also help people find out about possible carbon monoxide leaks and if there are any of irritants in the air for people suffering from asthma.

Inspections will be done at rental properties yearly.

They will be done in homes when the property is transferred during a sale.

If the furnace is not maintained it could cost you.

"Anything in the code can result in a fine," said Paulus. "It can result in a fine of up to $1,000."

That is after a 30 day warning to fix the problem.
