Allentown man hit, killed by vehicle while running across I-78

SALISBURY TWP., Pa. - An Allentown man died after he was hit by a vehicle while trying to run across Interstate 78 in Lehigh County.

Theodore Smith, 57, was hit on I-78 in Salisbury Township, near the Summit Lawn Exit 59, around 11:15 p.m. Saturday, according the Lehigh County coroner's office.

State police said Smith tried to run from the eastbound shoulder across all lanes of I-78. He was hit by an oncoming vehicle in the far right westbound lane, officials said.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the vehicle was traveling at a constant speed as it approached, but the crash is still under investigation.
