Allentown NIZ recognized as one of world's best projects

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Allentown's Neighborhood Improvement Zone, the NIZ, is being recognized as one of the top 13 projects of its kind by the Urban Land Institute.

The NIZ received a 2017-18 Global Award for Excellence. The Urban Land Institute's award program is designed to 'identify and promote best practices in all types of real estate development.'

Although Allentown received this award, it isn't the first. The Urban Land Institute recognized the city as one of six transforming communities across the U.S. in 2016.

For those unfamiliar, the NIZ is a state legislature approved tax district where all state and local tax revenues (with the exception of real estate taxes) can be used to pay for construction projects in the zone.

"This is quite an honor and comes from one of the most widely respected organizations in the world," Mayor Ed Pawlowski said. "Being placed on an equal footing with other projects known around the nation and the world is very significant."
