Allentown Police arrest suspected car thief within hours of the crime

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Police apprehended a suspect and stolen car within hours of the initial crime Friday night.

At around 6:15 p.m., Allentown Police responded to the area of the Valley Farm Market shopping center in the 700 block of West Emaus Avenue for reports of a stolen vehicle.

Officers came to the scene and saw the car from a distance, but Allentown Police Captain Reinik says the suspect saw them too and took off towards the Mountainville Shopping Center on South Fourth Street.

Reinik says the suspect was too far away for a chase to ensue; police were not sure where the stolen vehicle was driven to, but they checked the area and ended up finding the vehicle parked at the Brandywine Apartments in the 2200 block of South Fountain Street.

The Lehigh County Auto Theft Task Force then began watching the car, waiting for him to come out, which happened within an hour.

They tried to apprehend him, but he took off running, crossing Emaus Avenue through to the 2300 block of South Lumber Street. Police surrounded the place and used K9s to eventually find him hiding in a backyard.

He was taken in to custody without incident at about 8:25 p.m.

Police have not yet named the suspect.
