Allentown police chief's son arrested after allegedly pointing loaded gun at detectives

Police chief's son charged

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The son of Allentown police Chief Joel Fitzgerald was arrested after he allegedly pointed a loaded gun at two Lehigh County detectives, officials said.

Christopher Fitzgerald, 22, is free on bail but facing charges that include simple assault and reckless endangerment, according to court documents obtained by 69 News.

Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin told 69 News it started with what can be described as a "road rage incident" on MacArthur Road in Whitehall Township on Friday night.

The suspect, identified as Christopher Fitzgerald, repeatedly "brake-checked" the detectives, who were wearing plain clothes and in an unmarked vehicle, according to court documents.

The car, a white Nissan, then came to a complete stop and pulled over, reportedly nearly causing an accident, police said.

Fitzgerald then opened a car door and pointed a Glock handgun loaded with 16 rounds at the detectives, according to court documents.

The officers reportedly thought they were about to be shot and placed their vehicle in reverse to escape of the line of fire. They then called for backup, police said.

Whitehall police later found Fitzgerald stopped in a parking lot at the Lehigh Valley Mall.

Joel Fitzgerald took over as Allentown's police chief last December. Reached Sunday morning, Chief Fitzgerald told 69 News that he had no comment on the charges against his son.
