Mom seen throwing baby off bridge, then jumps

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - A woman was seen throwing her baby into the Lehigh River and then jumping from a bridge, in what police are calling an apparent attempted murder-suicide.

It happened around 1:45 p.m. at the Hamilton Street Bridge over the Lehigh River.

Officials say witnesses reported seeing a 19-year-old woman throwing her 1-year-old baby boy into the river and then jumping from the bridge.

Allentown Police Capt. William Reinik said police found the baby about 700 yards down stream and were able to perform live-saving CPR.

"I commend these two officers for actually going into the river and pulling him out and doing CPR. That's what saved this baby's life in my opinion," Reinik said.

Both the baby and the mom are in serious condition, but Reinik says it appears both of them will survive.

At this point, Reinik is calling the incident an apparent attempted murder-suicide. The investigation continues and at there's no word on what charges the mother may face.
