Allentown School District Superintendent reviews PSSA results

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - A journey begins with the first step.

Allentown School District Superintendent Thomas Parker said the PSSA results released Wednesday show the district has a way to go.

"It's not what we wanted to see," Parker said of the results during Thursday night's board of directors' meeting.

The tests, which were given to students in grades 3-8, indicate ASD had some of the worst results for math and English anywhere in the Lehigh Valley.

That said, Parker added that "there are some bright spots and that incremental growth is the way to move the needle."

He said math scores improved at Lehigh Parkway or the Ramos elementary schools. He added Thursday night the results do not reflect the potential of ASD students.

In other business, directors approved a personnel report that included several administrators. Serena Houston-Edwards was hired as executive director of human resources. She will be paid $119,000 per year.

Lori Kegley, Deanna Maguire, Bob Morrow, Jr. and Matthew Pile were all reassigned to new positions. Kegley is now the acting assistant principal at Roosevelt Elementary, Maguire becomes the assistant principal at Union Terrace Elementary, while Morrow is the acting principal at South Mountain Middle School and Pile was named the acting principal at Sheridan Elementary.

Also, directors approved the contract with Lehigh Valley Faces to develop the district's "Welcome Back" promotional initiative. The company created and design three "Welcome Back" ads, a video featuring Parker, a 60-second radio ad, and an ad campaign used in social media and on various billboards throughout the city
