School board policy requires uniforms starting in September

Allentown students: Get your uniforms on

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - It's official: students in the Allentown School District will begin wearing uniforms in September.

The school board provided the first look at the uniforms Thursday night.

Elementary students will wear white or light blue polo shirts, navy blue shorts or pants, and girls can also wear navy blue jumpers.

Middle school students can wear white or maroon polo shirts, khaki or black pants, khaki shorts or capri pants, or khaki skirts.

The high schools will each have their own distinct uniform, based on their school colors.

Students at Dieruff will wear navy blue or gray polo shirts, khaki or black pants, khaki shorts or capris, or khaki skirts.

All students would wear solid-colored shoes and belts.

At Allen High School, students will wear royal blue or yellow polo shirts, khaki or black pants, khaki shorts or capris, or khaki skirts.

According to the school district, there are three main reasons for requiring uniforms:

"We want to establish a business-like climate in our schools that indicates we are serious about learning and about safety.

Uniforms result in economic savings for parents and guardians over the usual costs of dressing students for a school year.

Discussions with the staff and the results of community surveys indicate strong support for a uniform dress code (approximately 80%). "

School district officials says there will likely be more outfits added to the list of acceptable uniforms.

Flyers with information about the uniforms will be sent to parents next week.

Officials said at the end of the second year of the program, school administration will review the uniform program.
