Allentown to enter waterfront land swap deal

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Allentown City Council unanimously authorized the city to enter into a land swap agreement during Wednesday night's meeting that will allow the Riverside Drive development along the Lehigh Valley Waterfront to move forward.

The city has been working with the Brewers Hill Development Group and The Waterfront Partners to develop a new road at the waterfront, which will be called Riverside Drive. The road, according to city documents, will be built along the railroad bed. In order to complete the road, additional right of way is needed.

With Wednesday night's resolution, Allentown will swap city-owned land along Pump Place road for land along the eastern side of the old Neweiller Brewery owned by Brewers Hill, along the former railroad tracks. This allows the city to have the right-of-way for the construction of the new Riverside Drive at the Waterfront.

In other news, council approved a contract between the city and the Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley to offer a housing rehabilitation program to income-eligible property owners or property owners with income-eligible tenants within the Upside Allentown district. In introducing the measure, the Pawlowski administration said the program's goal is to improve the quality of housing in that area.

"I believe this will help people and improve the housing market," said President Ray O'Connell.

In other business, council also approved the appointment of the Rev. Maritza Torres Dolich to the recreation board. Torres Dolich is the pastor of Outreach, director of St. Stephen Outreach Center of Christ Lutheran Church. She replaces Hector Rivera. Torres Dolich's appointment runs through Jan. 20, 2021.
