Arden Courts homicide investigation

BETHLEHEM TWP., Pa. - Authorities in Northampton County are investigating the death of a patient at an assisted living facility.

The Northampton County Coroner's Office has ruled the death of Daniel Scanlan as a homicide. The 84-year-old died in April after a stay at Arden Courts of Old Orchard off Freemansburg Avenue in Bethlehem Township.

Northampton County Coroner Zachary Lysek said Scanlan died from complications due to a head injury.

Authorities have not released any additional information, but said they believe Scanlan's death was an isolated incident.

A spokesperson for Arden Courts said the Pennsylvania Department of Health investigated the facility earlier this year following the incident and that state officials cleared Arden Courts as a result of that visit.

Arden Courts also issued a statement regarding Scalan's death.

"The safety and well-being of our residents is our primary concern. We are committed to delivering quality care to our residents and our caregivers are deeply committed to their emotional and physical well-being.

In accordance with federal and state laws and regulations, we are not permitted to discuss individual residents who reside or have resided in the facility due to our commitment to residents’ confidentiality and rights.   The issue in question was isolated and there is no risk to residents.

We extend our sincere condolences to the resident’s family."
