Bethlehem Area School District OKs several programming deals

The Bethlehem Area School District will enter into five separate contracts with the Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 following Monday night's board of directors meeting.

In the first pact, CIU will provide special education programs for the district in the amount of $5.23 million for the 2017-2018 year. Typically CIU provides this service for the district and this year's deal was an increase of more than $563,000 from last year's contract.

In the second agreement, CIU will provide a licensed practitioner or registered nurse to administer medications for BASD students while attending field trips at a cost of $51.50 per hour for LPNs and $56.65 per hour for RNs for the current school year.

In the third agreement, CIU will provide transportation services to alternative and regular education students at a projected rate of $2.64 per mile per student for the year.

The fourth deal with CIU focuses on Title 1 academic, parent and family engagement services for the district's non-public school students in the amount of $68,300.

The last deal is for Title II professional development services for non-public school students in an amount not to exceed $98,100. Both of these are required by federal law.

Directors also OK'd a pact with the City of Bethlehem, which had requested an agreement with BASD to provide transportation assistance in the event of a public health emergency. The district's bus fleet could be made available outside of the regular daily bus routes in case of such an emergency.

Finally, directors accepted the resignation of Jolene Vitalos as the Bethlehem Education Association's president. The move occurred during its approval of several personnel moves. The resignation is effective Oct. 6.
