Bethlehem man dumps shaggy dog in Lower Saucon

Police said Lawrence Greenfield may be cited

LOWER SAUCON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The man who dumped a little shaggy dog in Lower Saucon Township Wednesday evening has been identified by police.

Twenty-seven-year-old Lawrence Greenfield of Bethlehem told police he scooped up the dog with a bucket because it was running around loose in the city and acting aggressively toward children.

Greenfield said he decided to drop the dog off in what he called "the middle of nowhere" -- along Sherry Hill Road in Lower Saucon.

Greenfield told police he didn't know doing that was illegal, said Lower Saucon Police Chief Guy Lesser.  He also told police he decided to drive the dog into the country after unsuccessfully taking it to an animal shelter.

A witness observed the dog dumping shortly before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and called police.

Initial reports were that a woman driving a silver Ford Taurus stopped at the edge of Sherry Hill Road, opened the door and dropped off a small brown/tan dog.

The police chief said that turned out to be incorrect. He said Greenfield borrowed his mother's car to drive the dog out of town.

Lesser said the matter is still being investigated and Greenfield may be cited.

The chief said it's still not known who owns the dog, which currently is living in the township's dog pen.

Anyone who recognizes the dog is asked to call the police department's non-emergency number: 610-759-2200.
