Bethlehem police: Man held boy as he threatened to jump off top of Sands parking garage

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - A suicidal man threatened to jump from the top deck of the Sands Casino parking garage holding his 3-year-old son along the railing, according to police.

Police said the incident began around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday when they responded to a report of a domestic dispute in the 900 block of Hellertown Road.

Police said an injured woman at the home said her husband assaulted her, threatened suicide and took their three-year-old son.

A short time late, police received a call about a male threatening suicide on the 7th level of the Sands Casino parking garage.

When police arrived, the man was on the top level of the garage standing on the railing holding the child.

Officials said two officers were able to get the man to place the child down onto the floor. The man did this and stood back up and started to move forward to jump. As he did this, the officers rushed him, grabbing and tackling him to the parking deck floor, according to police.

The child was uninjured. The mother of the child was treated for injures. The child and mother have been reunited.

The husband was taken to St. Luke's Hospital where he was admitted for a mental health evaluation. This incident is under investigation and criminal charges are pending at this time, police said.

Police said they are not releasing the name of the man at this time since he has not been formally charged. As the investigation proceeds, additional information may be released, according to police.
