Boy returns home with new kidney

A Northampton County boy who just got a kidney transplant is now home and healing.

Along the way, 9-year-old Aidan Conover and his family are hoping to inspire others to give the gift of life.

Aidan underwent his transplant March 12 after waiting a year. Now, two weeks later, he's out of the hospital and visiting with his great aunt and her dog, Popeye.

"He is happier," said Aidan's mom, Bobbi Conover. "He is healthier. It's bitter sweet because you are excited that Aidan had the kidney but then obviously another family lost somebody that they loved."

Aidan is being closely monitored by doctors to see if the rare disease that caused him to need a new kidney, FSGS, comes back.

Aidan takes more than a dozen pills daily and must make several trips each week to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for checkups.

The Conover family is selling support bands on Facebook to help offset Aidan's medical costs.

More than 2,300 people have been following Aidan's courageous journey on the social media site.

"I will show him things on Facebook and messages, and he's only 9, so I don't think he fully gets all the people who are there for him but it's amazing," said Bobbi.

For now, Aidan is taking it day by day, sharing his experience with friends and encouraging people to become donors.

"You can save people's lives," said Aidan, who's also excited about doing simple things like going fishing with his family this weekend.
