Businessmen accused of defrauding taxpayers freed on bail

BETHLEHEM TWP., Pa. - Two men who officials said lined their pockets with taxpayer money were in court Tuesday.

Robert Kearns and his business partner, P.J. McLaine, were arraigned on charges they defrauded Bethlehem Twp., Northampton Co., of more than $800,000.

The Northampton County district attorney said the two men made a deal with the township, promising to save money on street lights, but officials said they took the money for themselves without doing very much work.

McLaine and Kearns both posted bail. They're expected to be back in court next week for a preliminary hearing.
