Coca-Cola plant expanding in Upper Macungie

Addition means 28 new jobs

UPPER MACUNGIE TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Coca-Cola has completed a $42.9-million expansion at its manufacturing plant in Upper Macungie Township.

The 50,000-square-foot addition will result in "at least 28 new, high paying jobs."

That's far less than the 125 new jobs promised when the expansion was announced in February 2012.

The  expansion, which won't be fully operational until next year, will expand Coca-Cola's ability to produce more non-carbonated products, which the company began manufacturing last year.

Before the addition was added, the plant covered 225,000 square feet.

The expansion was announced Thursday by Governor Tom Corbett.

"As governor, it is my priority to bring jobs back to Pennsylvania by unleashing the growth of the private sector," said Corbett in a statement.

"It is because of the growth of companies like Coca-Cola, and countless others throughout Pennsylvania, that more than 19,000 jobs were created last month alone."

The project was coordinated by the Governor's Action Team, which works with businesses considering expanding in Pennsylvania.

Coca-Cola received funding from the State Department of Community and Economic Development, including $56,000 in Job Creation Tax Credits and a $12,600 Guaranteed Free Training grant, to be used for training its new workforce at the plant.

In addition to 28 new jobs, the expansion  is expected to retain an additional 130 employees within the three years of the initial agreement.

"The expansion of our facility would not be possible without the support and leadership of the commonwealth," said Tim Fischbach,, plant manager for the Lehigh Valley Coca-Cola facility.

"Not only are we growing our workforce, we are creating new and diverse opportunities for existing employees.

"We see a bright future in the Greater Lehigh Valley metropolitan region. For Coca-Cola, it feels like home and we look forward to continuing to be a strong community partner here."
