Consultant finds most cost-effective location for new county jail

VIDEO: Updates on new Northampton Co...

EASTON, Pa. - Northampton County Executive John Brown broke down the numbers Tuesday afternoon after releasing the results of a prison feasibility study.

Brown says that a consultant, DLR Group, crunched the numbers at seven potential sites and found that the most efficient and cost-effective option would be to build on current county property next to the current jail in Easton.

Brown says the total cost for the new jail will be about $185 million. He says consultants found the county will start to recoup money after 14 years from savings in efficiencies in the new jail.

"Every year we're already paying in. You just don't see it because of the inefficiencies," Brown said. "The new jail will allow us to capture that and actually put it back to work."

Brown says the contract to build the jail will go out to bid, but it is still too early to say when ground will be broken. If and when approved by county council, design work on the jail will take about a year and construction about two years.
