Crash leaves Bethlehem police cruiser on its side

VIDEO Crash leaves Bethlehem police...

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Bethlehem police are investigating a crash involving one of their own. A cruiser and another car were involved in the wreck Sunday night.

Eighth street resident Christina Polhemus says after the siren, she heard three loud crashes. She says she went outside to see what was going on.

"The police car was kind of on its side near the intersection and the  red car which I don't know which car it was but it was red  and that was up further into the corner there," she said.

Bethlehem police have not released the name of the officer or the driver of the other vehicle.

Police said both vehicles sustained damage and were towed from the scene. They said the officer and other driver were transported to St. Luke's Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Polhemus said while this is a busy intersection with a school just across the street she has never seen an accident here before, but neighbor Chris Dehmer has a different opinion.

"I believe the intersection is extremely dangerous not only because of the kids crossing there but because the light  system, the don't cross system i rather old, it's not updated like the ones in town," he said.

Dehmer says he was hit while walking across the street at this intersection six years ago.

He said while he didn't see the officer involved accident, he has seen several others at this location in the last few years and thinks the city should update the traffic signal systems.

Police said the crash is under investigation.

Police are asking anyone who might have seen the accident call 610-865-7187.
