Darin Steward, Northampton County sheriff's deputy, copied classified documents, officials say

EASTON, Pa. - A Northampton County sheriff's deputy is in trouble with the law for photocopying classified documents, officials said.

Darin Steward was released on his own recognizance after being arraigned Thursday on a charge of obstructing administration of law or other governmental function.

The investigation began March 26 when an attorney reported to District Attorney John Morganelli that he received a copy of a completed application for a Pennsylvania license to carry firearms, which is considered to be a confidential document, according to court papers.

Morganelli subsequently asked for Sheriff Randall Miller's assistance in determining who made the copy. Miller, in turn, directed one of his sergeants to review the office's surveillance video, officials said.

During a lunch break the next day, March 27, the investigating sergeant mentioned to Steward that he had "to review video because someone had been tampering with the license to carry paperwork," according to court documents.

Steward then stated, "You don't have to do an investigation. I did it," according to court documents.

Steward then told his superiors that he copied a specific file on the morning of Sun., March 10 and hand-delivered it to West Easton borough Councilwoman Kelly Gross on March 15.

Court documents did not indicate who the file belonged to or why it was provided to Gross.

Steward is due in court for a preliminary hearing on May 29.
