Developer confident Lehigh Valley can snag Amazon HQ2

VIDEO: LV to be Amazon HQ2?

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Amazon closed applications Thursday for its second United States headquarters, a hot bid that cities and regions across the country are vying for, including the Lehigh Valley.

The Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation (LVEDC) submitted a proposal to the company, explaining why the area would be the perfect spot for HQ2.

"We're not only the third largest market in Pennsylvania but we're the 65th largest market in the United States," said Don Cunningham, President and CEO of LVEDC.

The stakes are high and the competition is fierce.

"We've got as good as an opportunity as anybody else," says Cunningham.

Cunningham says he can't go into specifics about what, if any, tax breaks or incentives the proposal offered but he says the Lehigh Valley's close proximity to Philadelphia and New York City, combined with its low cost of living makes the Lehigh Valley a strong contender for the headquarters.

Plus, the tech giant already has a presence in the area.

"Amazon is already here, with 2.4 million square feet of fulfillment space, with almost 2,000 employees and with a large presence at the Lehigh Valley International Airport with Amazon Prime," said Cunningham.

Amazon says it plans to invest more than $5 billion in the project, creating more than 50,000 high-paying jobs.

"This is a rare instance where a large company does a nationwide procurement to locate its new home," said Cunningham.

Cunningham says the paperwork is in and now it's a waiting game.

Amazon is expected to make a decision some time in 2018.
