District attorney investigates deadly police-involved shooting in Allentown

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Lehigh County district attorney is investigating a police-involved shooting following an armed robbery at a pharmacy and a chase through the streets of Allentown.

A windshield full of bullet holes is what people who live on the west end of Allentown discovered when they looked outside to find out where all the noise was coming from early Sunday morning.

Police said just after 8 a.m. Sunday, Joseph Hodgin, 43, robbed the Whitehall Pharmacy in Whitehall Township and shot the store's owner, Kanchanbhai Patel.

Hodgin took off in a white truck, and Allentown police said they spotted his truck not long after near 10th and Chew streets.

They said Hodgin refused to stop, leading police on a chase before crashing into two patrol cars at 19th and Green streets.

Police said they tried to get Hodgin to surrender, but opened fire when he allegedly pointed a gun at officers.

People who live in the area came out of their houses and watched as police blocked off the area. Carlos Santiago was doing yard work when he heard the shots.

"I heard 'pop pop pop pop,' and it just continued and I heard the big hit when when they crash and when I came over here, they were pulling the body out. He didn't look alive," he said.

Santiago said he saw police pull Hodgin out of the truck, and said he looked like he was dead.

The Lehigh County coroner confirmed Hodgin died from gunshot wounds to the body.

Many residents were shocked by what happened.

"I heard about 30 shots, gunshots, then a delay with another 15, 20 then you heard sirens and silence and sirens again," another neighbor said.

The pharmacy owner was last reported to be in stable condition at Lehigh Valley Hospital.

The DA is looking over the case, trying to figure out what led Hodgin to set into motion the deadly series of events.
