Domestic incident sparked 'shelter in place' in Hanover Twp.

HANOVER TWP., Pa. - Officials say the Thursday morning shelter in place notification all started with their response to a domestic situation in Hanover Township.

Police were dispatched to the 1300 block of Stafore Drive around 5 p.m. Wednesday. The victim told police her brother, William Snyder, struck her several times on her head and face with a closed fist before fleeing the scene.

A warrant was then issued and police attempted to serve the warrant at Snyder's residence in the 1100 block of Bridle Path Road in Hanover Township around 9:15 a.m. Thursday.

Officers say they heard someone behind the door and as they were speaking to him, they believed they heard a 'round being racked into a firearm.' They retreated and took cover.

The perimeter of the scene was then secured and people in the immediate area were asked to shelter in place. All homes, businesses and day care centers in the immediate vicinity were evacuated.

Police tried to communicate with Snyder via a loud speaker for approximately three hours until Snyder came out of his front door and was taken into custody without incident. Police say he indicated he did not know the officers were there.

Another search warrant was obtained to search for weapons in the house, but when searching officers detected a strong chemical odor. Using protective breathing equipment, officials discovered marijuana growing in the basement along with other unknown chemicals.

Police say they obtained a search warrant to search the residence for controlled substances. As of 3:30 p.m. Thursday, officers and the Pennsylvania State Police lab team were still on scene.

Snyder will be arraigned on simple assault and harassment charges. Additional charges are pending.
