Donut Derby brings riders and junk food together

UPPER MACUNGIE TWP., Pa. - If you're looking for a fun way to ride your bike and eat donuts too, look no further than the annual Lehigh Wheelmen Donut Derby.

The event is simple, race 36 miles, but for each donut you eat, you shave some time off your score.

The kids were certainly not left out of the fun. They got to participate in the "Munchkin Mile."

That event was held at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center in Upper Macungie Township, Lehigh County.

"So we started having the Munchkin Mile as sort of a fun thing for the kids. They ride three laps around the track, which is a kilometer. They eat a munchkin, everybody gets a medal, they get exercise and we have a lot of fun cheering them on," said organizer Jack Helffrich.

Twenty-seven kids participated in the Munchkin Mile and 308 adults participated in the Donut Derby. The winner ate 61 donuts and rode 36 miles.
