Dorney Park's new ride is schedule to open Memorial Day

SOUTH WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. - We are entering the homestretch for the completion of Dorney Park's newest attraction

The Snake Pit is scheduled to open Memorial Day, but so far Mother Nature hasn't cooperated.

Dorney Park says it had hoped for a mild winter but planned for snow days.

Officials say once the temperature goes above freezing, they are going to put the cold blooded thrill ride together.

For now, it's crazy cold outside, but workers at Dorney Park are putting together the Snake Pit just the same.

"It will be six unique extreme water slides under the umbrella title of Snake Pit," said Bernard Bonuccelli, VP of Sales and Marketing.

Bonuccelli says the snow and cold were factored into the construction schedule, so crews are busy assembling the tubes in 40 foot sections, and as soon as the temperatures get above freezing the Python's Plummet, the Boa Blasters and the Constrictor will start to take shape.

It's a project being overseen by Steve Pollack, who not only builds water slides, but also rides them.

"It takes your breath away when the bottoms come out," said Pollack. "It's like a thrill ride."

Pollack says he built an identical Snake Pit in Kansas City last year.

He says he's anxious for the temperatures to warm up so this cold blooded thrill ride can kick off the unofficial start to summer.

"Even with the number of snows that we have had we still are cautiously optimistic," said Bonuccelli.
