Drive-thru flu shots offered

Drive-thru flu shots offered by LVHN

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Thousands of people rolled up their sleeves and rolled down their windows Saturday.  The Lehigh Valley Health Network was giving away flu shots on the go at its annual drive-thru flu shot campaign.  And folks didn't even need to get out of the car.

"This is our third year doing flu shots," said Darryl Schafer.  "The whole family gets it done and we don't have to worry about all the separate appointments."

"I think it's a great service for the community and I do think the hospital deserves a lot of credit for this," shared Jay Cohen.

In its 15th year, anyone 6 months and older can take part in the free event.  Most folks were in and out in 15 to 20 minutes.

About 4,000 people pre-registered online, and organizers expect to be on par with last year's turnout.

"Between the two days we could do 10,000 each day," explained LVHN Director of Infection Control Terry Burger.  "We're very confident giving 1,000 an hour, I'm anticipating somewhat in the vicinity of about 10,000."

About 750 volunteers were on hand to vaccinate people in 12 different lanes.  Cars with kids were being directed to a special line and pink slips let volunteers know children under the age of 12 are inside.

"Number one you have to have the skill, number two it takes a little longer you have to get them out of their car seat or in the leg," said Burger.

The network is also collecting non-perishable food items they'll donate to area food banks.  If you missed the event, drive-thru flu shots will be also given Sunday at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown.

"Protect yourself, protect your family, protect your co-workers," emphasized Burger.  "The number one means of protecting yourself from influenza is the flu shot."

Sunday's campaign runs from 9 to 3PM.  Close to 6,000 people came out Saturday so organizers suggest coming in the afternoon.
