Driver charged with hitting boy, 5, at school bus stop in Whitehall

WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. - A Lehigh County woman was charged Friday for allegedly hitting a 5-year-old boy with her car as he crossed the street to board a school bus.

The accident happened around 8:15 a.m. on Sept. 12 on Fairmont Avenue in Whitehall Township.

The bus was stopped, facing east, when a car, driven by Beverly A. Bell, of 1 Maryland Circle, Whitehall Township, was traveling west, police said.

The car's driver's side front bumper hit the boy on the left side, and he ended up underneath the bus, police said.

Witnesses told police the bus had red warning lights, a crossing arm and sign activated at the time of the accident.

Bell, 62, was arraigned Friday on charges of recklessly endangering another person, careless and reckless driving, meeting or overtaking a school bus and driving a vehicle at an unsafe speed. She was released on $25,000 unsecured bail.
