Drugs seized, suspects busted during sweep in Allentown

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - A drug sweep in Allentown led to more than a dozen arrests and different drugs taken off the street.

The Allentown Police Department and several other agencies were involved in the sweep Wednesday. Police told 69 News the purpose was to target street-level drug dealing and gang-related activity.

"We made 12 drug arrests, 14 arrests overall and we rid a lot neighborhoods of some of the problems they indicated they had," said Capt. Glen Dorney, Allentown Police Dept., adding that many of the arrests happened because of citizens' complaints.

People who live in some of the areas where arrests happened said they are relieved.

"I feel that the streets are now probably safer now that they're off and there will be less drugs," said Wayne Williams. "Glad the police were able to catch them."

"I think it's wonderful and they still have a lot to do yet," said Tina Arnold.

Several people were charged with possession and possession with intent to deliver. The drugs seized include heroin, cocaine and marijuana. One suspect had more than 200 bags of heroin.

"It was a large quantity and that actually came about based on observations from the community," said Dorney, who encouraged citizens to contact police if they have similar concerns about activity happening in their neighborhood.

"There's a lot more that needs to be done. There's a lot more," Arnold said.
