Duck Donuts debuts in the Lehigh Valley

Crazy-flavored donuts made to order.

SOUTH WHITEHALL, Pa. - The popular chain Duck Donuts has opened a shop in South Whitehall.

Their niche is donuts made to order, with some unique flavors, like maple bacon with caramel drizzle to name one of the almost innumerable combinations.

"French toast with bacon," was how a patron described the taste of that particular snack.

Co-owners Jason and Rosanna Sowers first tried the donuts on a trip out of town, before deciding to bring the chain to the Lehigh Valley.

The idea is the brainchild of a King of Prussia native, Russ DiGilio.

He opened the first one in Duck, North Carolina; hence the fowl theme.

"This is his baby so he made it clear how he would like us to continue with that business idea," said Rosanna.

Everything starts with a vanilla cake donut.

Next, customers pick coatings, like peanut butter, vanilla, or chocolate to name a few.

At that point, things get interesting.

Toppings like graham cracker, Oreo, and coconut are available, along with drizzles that run the gamut from hot fudge to marshmallow.

The donuts take some time, since they're basically made from scratch.

"I've been staring at this glass watching every donut that has come up hoping it's mine," one hungry woman said with a smile.

But people seemed to like them.

"Delicious" and "amazing" were a few of the words thrown around the room.

There are about 56 Duck Donuts now, with another 130 or so on the way.
