Easton could see new prison built right next to old property

VIDEO: Northampton County new jail plans

EASTON, Pa. - Northampton County Executive John Brown said he wants to put the new county prison next to the old one in Easton's West Ward.

Brown said rumors about building a prison at the Gracedale Nursing Home campus were created by his political rivals to sway voters during the upcoming November elections.

"'I've been very clear, no jail at Gracedale…never was a plan there,” Brown said.

Brown said a study he commissioned found that the best place for the new jail would be in the current county complex that includes the courthouse.

Brown said that his plan is to keep inmates in the old jail while the new one is built and to demolish the old jail and build a new parking deck.

"I believe we can get it done in an innovative way, probably faster than most people will realize and not have to raise taxes to do it,” Brown said.
