Easton schools getting $1.3 million in security upgrades

Commencement pushed back 6 days due to snowy weather.

EASTON, Pa. - Easton area students will start the 2014-2015 academic year in more secure schools.

The school board voted Tuesday night to spend $1.3 million for security upgrades at several district schools.

It's an issue the board began discussing early last year in the wake of the mass school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

The work includes renovating the entrances of a number of buildings to install new secure vestibules, as well as adding new card readers and cameras.

The project is being handled by Penn Builders of Quakertown, at a cost of $1,035,000, and Communication Systems, Inc. for $341,859.

School officials say the work will happen this summer in time for the start of school in August.

In other business, this year's snowy weather is delaying Easton Area High School's graduation.

Superintendent John Reinhart said that the class of 2014 will now get their diplomas on Monday, June 16 at Stabler Arena, six days later than originally scheduled. The last day of school will be Friday, June 13.

Also Tuesday, Reinhart introduced a new scholarship in memory of Rose Campbell and her husband Paul to benefit graduates who plan to become educators.

Rose Campbell was herself a lifelong Easton Area educator, serving as a teacher and administrator for 43 years, and even working as acting principal at three different schools after her retirement.

The $500 and $1000 scholarships will be awarded on an annual basis.
