UPPER MILFORD TWP., Pa. - There's a call for change in Lehigh County where two men were struck and killed by a train this week.
Padraic Cremins, 24, and Timothy Daddario, 22, were walking along the train tracks behind Shultz Construction in Upper Milford Township Monday afternoon when they hit by a 43-car Norfolk Southern freight.
Both men worked at Hursh's Landscaping, and relied on public transportation to get home every night.
The closest LANTA bus stop is at the Weis Market in Emmaus.
Instead of walking along Chestnut Street to catch the bus, some of the nearby workers, including Cremins and Daddario, walked along the train tracks.
"It's a dangerous walk. There isn't any room for the guys to go on the road to walk," said Paul Navarre, manager at Hursh's Landscaping.
The nearby pedestrian bridge is connected by a roadway with a narrow shoulder and there are no sidewalks.
About two years ago, a Hursh's employee was severely injured walking there.
"We don't need any more accidents," said Hunter Stewart, employee at Hursh's Landscaping.
Hursh's employees aren't the only people who sometimes take the Chestnut Street route.
James Galloway walks that way every day.
"It's pretty bad, especially in the winter," said James Galloway, who works at nearby Mechanics Plus.
As of Tuesday, Hursh's employees are no longer allowed to walk around the tracks.
In the meantime, the company is driving workers to the bus stop, but they are hoping for a more permanent fix.
"We would like to see a bus stop over here," Stewart said.
"It should be widened," Navarre said.
PennDOT expects to replace the bridge in 2018, but there are no plans beyond that.
"The rest of the roadway doesn't plan for any pedestrian accommodations and we haven't had any indications from locals that's a dire need there either," said Ron Young, PennDot Spokesperson.
Young encourages walkers to make other arrangements.
"If the pedestrian feels unsafe, maybe they can take alternative transportation," Young said.
LANTA does not currently have any plans to change the bus stop or add a new one.
