EPA grants NJ petition on Portland Generating Station

The Environmental Protection Agency has approved a petition from New Jersey concerning Gen-On's Portland Generating Station in Northampton County.

The ruling requires the power plant in Upper Mount Bethel Township to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions by 81-percent over three years, with a 60-percent cut the first year.

Officials say those emissions are harming air quality and endangering public health in Hunterdon and Warren Counties.

Gen-On says it's reviewing the rule to determine exactly what it says.. and what the implications are for them.
