Fat-shaming Lady Gaga becomes a teachable moment

MACUNGIE, Pa. - Reaction to Lady Gaga's Super Bowl half-time performance exploded on social media.

Along with praise came many body shaming messages about Gaga's weight.

"Social media really gives a voice to the ugly," said Lisa Fiore, Council Director for Girls on the Run, Lehigh Valley.

Fiore, whose organization is built on creating healthy, body positive environments for girls said the body shaming isn't lost on today's social media savvy kids.

"We have to be monitoring it in such a way that we can always talk about what's being said."

Fiore said focusing on the positives of the performance is important and supporters have tweeted plenty of support as well.

"From the ugly you can take something beautiful…teach our girls that this isn't ok," Fiore said.
