Fegley family looking to expand in Allentown

VIDEO: Fegleys want to build 19,000...

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The owners of the Bethlehem and Allentown Brew Works have their eyes on a new endeavor: office real estate.

Jeff Fegley, co-owner of both restaurants, told WFMZ business has been strong.

"It's been going good. We've had a strong run in Bethlehem. Allentown seems to be just getting going now," he said.

So, they're looking to expand.

"Couple years ago we decided to make some acquisitions and buy some property. Invest further downtown here," said Fegley.

Specifically, he and his family bought several properties on Hamilton Street, on the edge of the NIZ, near the famous PPL Building.

The Fegley family just presented a plan to tear down several of those properties, and put up an office building with a footprint of 19,000 square feet.

"It could go as high as the sky, but I think realistically we're probably looking at something around a 10-story building," he said.

J.B. Reilly and his City Center Investment Corporation currently dominate the NIZ, with plans to build much more.

Fegley knows there's a lot of space to fill, but he's banking on demand to grow.

"Right now, J.B. is certainly leading the charge with downtown Allentown development. And the more success he has, the more attractive downtown Allentown becomes," he said.

The family also has a backup plan if the market should change.

"We're going to concentrate on commercial first. And then should there be any hiccups, residential is certainly in our minds," said Fegley.

With several more formal steps still ahead, Fegley thinks it could take four years before they break ground.
