Fire crews spend hours dousing hay truck inferno in Lehigh County

Hay truck bursts into flames

SOUTH WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. - Firefighters had their hands full battling a hay truck fire just off of Route 22 in Lehigh County.

The fire broke out around 4:30 p.m. in front of Rothrock motor sales, in the area of Mauch Chunk Road, in South Whitehall Township.

Multiple fire companies were called in to battle the blaze.

The fire forced crews to close the Route 22 on and off ramps for hours, causing traffic to back up.

Crews remained at the scene late into the night to extinguish any remaining flames in the hay and to clean up.

There's no word yet on what sparked the fire.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital for evaluation following a report of heat exhaustion. There were no other injuries reported.
