Fire rips through popular Northampton Co. restaurant

LOWER SAUCON TWP., Pa. - The owners of a popular restaurant in Northampton County are dealing with the aftermath of a late night fire.

Crews were called to Yianni's Taverna in the 3700 block of Old Philadelphia Pike in Lower Saucon Township just before 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Fire officials could be seen going in and out of it., as it had extensive damage inside.

The owners were at the scene, but too distraught to speak with us.

Yianni's is the former Gus's Crossroads restaurant and neighbors tell us this isn't the first time something like this has happened at the spot.

"They've had a lot of bad luck here.  I was a little kid, it burnt to the ground and then again my teenage years... there was another fire, there was an apartment building on the top floor and that's what burnt down and then now this," said neighbor, Tracey Maholland.

Officials say no one was hurt in the fire.

Yianni's released this statement on their Facebook Thursday:

"We are very sad to announce there was a fire in our restaurant last night, June 14, 2017. We will be closed until further notice. Due to the extensive damage we will need to postpone our event scheduled for June 22. We are so sorry for any inconvenience this may cause our faithful supporters.
Our family is devastated and appreciate all the phone calls and prayers. We are reading and listening to each and every one and and thank you all for the well wishes."
