Fire tears through garage in Weisenberg

Family woke up to firefighters knocking on door

WEISENBERG TWP., Pa. - Flames broke out overnight in Weisenberg Township, Lehigh County, near the Berks County border.

The fire tore through a garage on New Smithville Road, near Silver Creek Road.

Drivers on nearby Interstate 78 who saw the flames reported the fire just after 1 a.m. Thursday.

Firefighters had a tough time finding the fire initially, and when they did they had limited access to the property because of a bridge on the property.

The fire did not damage the house on the property. Crews said the wind actually kept the fire away from the house.

A family was home at the time but escaped unharmed after they woke up to the fire department knocking on their door.

"From what I know with the family, they were rather shocked when we came in. Our firefighters came knocking on the door to wake them up...they helped fire police rescue the nine or 10 dogs in the house," said Assistant Chief Scott Freeman of the Weisenberg Township Fire Department.

Two alarms were struck and crews from several departments were called in to help fight the fire.

It was put under control around 4 a.m. Firefighters cleared the scene a short time later.

No injuries were reported. Officials have not yet said what may have caused the fire.
