Former ballet dancer begins new chapter of career as an instructor

EASTON, Pa. - A renowned ballet dancer who is from the Lehigh Valley will soon open her own Ballet Academy in Easton.

She was a principal dancer in countless performances for the New York City Ballet.

The stage was her home for 22 years, but soon, Jennie Somogyi will have a new home.

"I realize that I really liked the whole private coaching aspect. It's sort of like solving a puzzle," said Somogyi.

Shortly after Somogyi retired from ballet in October of 2015, she realized she had a new calling in life; coaching and mentoring aspiring ballerinas.

"It felt rewarding so it's sort of got the momentum going," said Somogyi.

Somogyi says she plans on doing one-on-one coaching with advanced students that are truly serious about ballet and want to take their training to next level.

"I am looking for dancers who either want to pursue a professional career or are just looking to get into a good college program," said Somogyi.

All Somogyi needed next was the dance studio to teach in, and she found it, not in Philadelphia or New York, but right here at 8 Center Square in Easton.

"I always liked this building and when I found out it was available I thought this is the perfect location," said Somogyi.

It’s a location where Somogyi hopes to bring up and educate the next generation of professional ballerinas.

"I can not only help with the physical aspects of ballet but also how to be prepared. How to sew your point shoes, how to behave in an audition. I have a lot of experience and I am hoping to help a lot of kids," said Somogyi.
