Former Lehigh Co. man convicted in Florida quadruple-murder

Adam Matos faces death penalty.

TAMPA BAY, Fla. - A former Lehigh County man is facing a possible death sentence after being convicted of killing four people.

A jury found Adam Matos guilty Thursday in the 2014 killings of his ex-girlfriend, her new boyfriend and her parents in Florida.

There were tearful hugs inside the Florida courtroom as the jury found 32-year-old Matos guilty on four counts of first-degree murder.

“And now I judicate you guilty on all four counts," said the judge.

Matos is convicted in the quadruple murders of his former girlfriend Megan Brown, her new boyfriend Nicholas Leonard, and Brown's parents, Greg and Margaret.

Matos and the Browns moved from Lehigh County to Hudson, Florida. He and Megan had a son together.

In August 2014, police found the four victims stacked on top of each other after Matos brutally killed them days before.

Matos testified in court saying he had been suffering from paranoia. His defense attorney claimed self-defense saying Megan's new boyfriend, Nicholas, was trying to kill his client.

"Nicholas pulled out his gun from his pocket with his right hand and tried to point it at Adam," said the defense attorney.

The Tampa Bay Times reports Matos shot Greg Brown multiple times and then shot and killed Megan Brown who was hiding in the corner.

Matos then beat Megan's mother and Nicholas Leonard to death with a hammer.

Police say after the killings Matos took off with his 4-year-old son, triggering an Amber Alert.

The two were later found at a Tampa hotel.

The sentencing phase of the case is set to begin Monday.

Matos could get the death penalty if all 12 jurors agree to it. Otherwise, he'd be sentenced to life in prison.
